The United Mexico States, otherwise and more commonly known as Mexico, is arguably the most developed country in Latin America with various industries prospering and statistics that are on a par with its close neighbours, the USA, in some instances. Mexico is on the up at the moment and has been gradually moving up since declaring independence in 1810. However, that is not to say that there are not poor areas, which are to be found in the larger cities, like the capital of Mexico City. With a population of almost 109 million class differences still do exist there. The official language is Spanish and the currency the Peso.
There are many sports played in Mexico but, true to its Spanish heritage, football is one of the favourites! In fact, Mexico has a long and illustrious history of success on a world stage. Currently placed 15th in the FIFA ranking, the national team has been as high as 4th in March 1998 and May 2006. The low came in June 2007 when the team hit 26th. However they have soon bounced back and really climbed the rankings in recent months.
Mexico has appeared at the World Cup a total of 13 times and took part in the inaugural competition in 1930. Despite the number of appearances, the closest the team has ever come to winning it has been a place in the quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986. However, they have had much more success in the two other cups that they have appeared in. The CONCACAF Championship is the competition for the national teams within the Americas and Mexico have appeared in it 16 times, with the first being in 1965. Out of that 16, they have actually won it 7 times (1965, 1971, 1977, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003). They have also won the Confederations Cup, appearing in it five times since 1995 and winning the competition in 1999.
Domestic football in Mexico is played via the La Primera División de México, which is also known as the "Primera División Mexicana". It is considered one of the top leagues in the world, despite the fact that few people outside of the Americas have heard of it, and was founded in 1943. There are effectively two seasons per year, with the Apertura being played from February to June and the Clausura being played from August to December. Both crown a champion so the teams face a better chnce of winning. As a result of this, there is no domestic cup competition in Mexico at all.
The main teams are Guadalajara, America, Cruz Azul and Toluca, although UNAM and Pachua have made major progress in the past few years and are beginning to challenge the top teams on a regular basis. Guadalajara have won the title 11 times in total with America having won it 10 times. However, there is much competition there today and that makes the league a little more exciting than some of those elsewhere! |
